Thyroid function
The thyroid is a small gland in your neck that produces hormones that help to control your metabolism - thyroxine and triiodothyronine. They can affect how fast your heart beats, how deep you breathe, and whether you gain or lose weight. They can also help control your body temperature, cholesterol levels, and women’s menstrual cycles.
You have most likely heard of overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) and underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).
If you have overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) you may notice some of the following symptoms:
-
Weight loss with fatigue and feeling tired
-
Tremors, anxiety, difficulty sleeping
-
Swelling in the neck
On the other hand, if there aren’t enough thyroid hormones being secreted, then your cells may work slowly, a condition called hypothyroidism or an underactive thyroid
If you think that your thyroid gland may be underactive with symptoms such as:
-
Weight gain with fatigue and feeling tired
-
Slow pulse or heart rate
-
Hair loss or thinning
-
Impaired memory
Test components:
- Thyroid stimulating hormone
- Free thyroxine
