The Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test is a used primarily to screen for prostate cancer. The test measures the amount of PSA in your blood. PSA is a protein produced by both cancerous and noncancerous tissue in the prostate, a small gland that sits below the bladder in males

What will it show you:

The test will tell you the levels of PSA in your blood.  The chance of having prostate cancer goes up as the PSA level goes up, but it can also be a sign of another condition that's not cancer, such as:

  • an enlarged prostate
  • prostatitis
  • urinary infection

Why take this test:

  • If there is a history of prostrate cancer in the family 

  • If you are displaying any symptoms, such as 

    • An increased need to urinate, especially at night

    • A sudden need to urinate

    • Feeling like the bladder has not emptied fully

    • Difficulty starting or stopping a stream of urine

    • Visible blood in semen and/or urine

    • Fatigue

  • You are overweight or obese
